Outdoor specialist’s, inn-fresco, give their take on the smoking ban five years on…
Despite being five year since the smoking ban, there is still a lot of controversy surrounding the impact that it has had on the pub and bar industry. Initially many pubs invested in a smoking solution however, it became clear early on that customers actively choose pubs that provide a nice outdoor area, regardless of whether they smoke or not.
An estimated £100 million has been invested in outdoor areas as covered solutions have become more substantial and visually appealing. It has also become about much more than just providing an area for smokers with more and more people in the UK adopting the European culture of alfresco drinking and dining.
Inn-fresco provides outdoor commercial canopies (as seen here) and their other covering solutions help bars and pub establishments create a usable and attractive outdoor area that can be used all year round. Through some in-house research, the company found that the more welcoming a pub garden is the more returning customers it will attract, boosting overall turnover and profitability opportunities for business.
After the smoking ban, many bar owners invested in commercial canopies together with other measures – largely to accommodate the smokers. However, they too have now recognised the need to provide an attractive outdoor area where everyone can take advantage of good weather or shelter whilst enjoying their alfresco drinking and dining experience.
As a result, pub and bar owners are progressively looking for bigger, durable and more flexible, outdoor solutions to create an inviting environment for both their smoking and non-smoking customers.
A good investment in your outdoor area will help customers to stay longer and encourage them to return. Establishments that have already implemented outdoor areas have seen both their trade and revenue increase.
So whilst the smoking ban has forced many pubs to widen their consumer offering, inn-fresco believe there is little doubt that extending it further and banning smoking in all public areas would really affect all pubs.
