Viewers, ‘Prevention is better than cure’. This is not only the proverb of olden days. It is high time now for us to follow the simple advice given in this proverb. True. Advancement in science and technology simplified and found solutions in many areas of medical science. But, that does not mean to spoil our health and knock the hospital door.
To stay fit and healthy, it is important to know certain basic steps in our daily routine; as also to understand the good and bad of every food items that are available from nature and man-made and to consume the items accordingly. Basic steps that every individual should know to make him fit and healthy are:
(i) good oral hygiene like brushing the teeth twice daily, taking bathe twice daily, washing and cleaning the hands before taking food, living in clean surroundings, keep nails trimmed, wear clean clothes etc.
(ii) good and positive thoughts like no grumbling, looking the issues in good temper, avoiding worries about the past or future, make proper planning of things to be done etc.
(iii) doing physical exercise like brisk walking, running, jogging, cycling, swimming, outdoor playing etc.
(iv) doing relaxation and personality improvement exercises such as yoga, meditation etc.
Understanding the good and bad about individual food items plays a major role in preventing most of the unwanted health issues; as also to nourish the body to better health and charisma. Food items like fruits and vegetables are good for health for everyone. ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’. This is very much true; as apples contains enormous good substances that makes a persons health in sound and good condition. Likewise, adding even little quantities of onion, garlic, tomato, curry leaf, greens, cucumber etc. proves to be helpful for deciding the health mandate of individual.
Having said that, I must say that even within the category of fruits and vegetables, no two individual persons are alike in so far as consumption of particular fruit or vegetable. Some fruits & vegetables are better for one person than other depending on his body condition. The other side, the other fruits & vegetables are good for other person than the first one based on his body condition. Thus, it is very much important to know the pros and cons of individual fruits and vegetables linking to the individual person body condition.
To say specifically, a person who is having sugar problem should not consume sugar secreting fruits such as banana, mango, jackfruit, sapota etc. Whereas, for the same person, consumption of papaya, guava, jamun fruit etc are advisable for him to take. Similarly, a person who is deficient of vitamin A should take greens, carrots etc more in numbers. Person deficient of vitamin c should take mango, lemon and other citric group fruits/vegetables more in numbers.
Thus, it is important to the body condition of one’s own health and accordingly to choose the fruit / vegetable and to consume. Apart from fruits and vegetables, there are few other major food groups which are also important for the health of human beings. They are: cereals, pulses, oil and milk. Eating right type of food item in this group for the right season right climate is essential. For example, persons living in cold climate areas shall consume ragi. Persons living in sunny climate areas shall consume rice more. Adding to all above, well established habit towards consumption of food items and physical activities proved to be beneficial for all individual in maintaining their overall general health.
